In case you have not seen or read this tweet from Bill Maher in response to the Super Bowl 50 commercial about Opioid-Induced Constipation, response to it is heating up since Sunday.
Am I offended? You bet I am! First of all, I agree with David Kueck that "profanity is the common crutch of the conversational cripple". Next, I rarely take pain medications for my Psoriatic Arthritis, but this Winter I have had to reach for them regularly. For me, even one small dose of Percocet constipates me. It is a side effect I have to put up with, because being able to move and go to work trump being uncomfortable and bloated. I get that Mr. Maher was trying to make a joke, but it is the word "junkie" I cannot get over.
As a member of the elite #spoonie community, I know many folks who need opioid medications to function. I do not know a single one who abuses his/her pain medications.
Even worse than Mr. Maher's tweet is the White House's response to this commercial. Read here all about how our Executive Branch believes this commercial, designed to help chronically ill patients, will only serve to "fuel an opioid addiction crisis". Are you kidding me?! Do they seriously think folks who are addicted to pain medication will be encouraged to get more out of control by the promise of easier bowel movements? If that is true, then Miralax must be responsible for the obesity epidemic. Perhaps they should air a Super Bowl commercial with a slogan such as: "Eat all the artery and gut clogging foods you want, we'll clean up for you. When you're done, eat more". Good grief!
This is Josh Earnest, White House Press Secretary, @PressSec who is quoted in this article in USA Today.
Dear reader, I hope you will take this opportunity to let Mr. Maher and the White House know how you feel about being called a junkie and being lumped in with folks who suffer with drug addiction. Tell them how you feel about being parented by your Government, as if you have no free will of your own or do not have the sense to exercise personal responsibility. Tell them you'd rather they stay out of your bathroom and, if they must interfere, to get to work capping medication costs so that #spoonies forced into early retirement or onto disability can afford their treatments.
Lastly, pray for these clueless, insensitive fools. That is all.
